HOORAY HOORAY!
When our very scary story begins, Conchobar had just beaten enough lard out
of enough fellow celtic villagers to be king for the last month. But his
position was most precarious - Gaelic kinglets were numerous, bellicose,
and concupiscent of one-another's fiefdoms - as well as of one another's
wives and daughters. They were also devious, and well armed, and not beyond
using all sorts of potent celtic pagan curses and piseógs. So hanging on
to one's kingdom, possessions, females, *and* livestock, required much watchfulness,
conniving and readiness to maim and slaughter on a regular basis. Just as
well Conchobar actually enjoyed the process. Just as well, too, that his
daughter Lucinda had inherited special powers from his own mother, whose
judicious witchcraft had kept her husband in royal positions for much of
his adult life - except during that unfortunate bout of diaorrhea which left
him for dead when she caught him oggling Fiacra's buxom bride.

Through all the commotion, Daéasai supplied her creamy, sweet milk to the
O'Thrudúchú's, coaxed in by the soft caressing hands of Lucinda or the slightly
rougher ones of Sadbh. Having enjoyed a bit of how's yer father with the
Mac An Grosscoúill's bull the previous Autumn, every Spring, Daéasai would
give birth to a healthy calf which was either fattened or sold, depending
on the family's fortunes.

So, that day, Conchobar went into the byre, where he knew he would find his
daughter Lucinda milking Daéasai. He lowered his tall Celtic frame to pass
through the door, and before his eyes got used to the darkness within, he
could hear his daugther's soft lilting of an authentic traditional air, which
she found to be soothing to the cow, and conducive to the milking. Despite
his deep concerns, Conchobar could not help but smile at the melodious voice
of his beautiful daughter, whose womanly form he could now distinguish in
the dark byre.
"Father! You startled me!" said Lucinda, first irritated, but when seeing
her father's worried brow, suddenly solicitous. "What ails you, my Father?"
"Alas, darling daughter, I fear my kingship will soon come to an end," he
finally confessed.
