conundrum

do stereotypes exist because they are reinforced, or because we create an image we anticipate will be proved through experience? before you answer this question, think about how you would apply your line of thinking to the label "racist". i've hit a loop that can't be solved.

They exist because of both of those. Why must they be mutually exclusive? In some cases, they appear to be reinforced, and in others, because one thinks that a stereotype is being reinforced, they are created in anticipation. If they had to be mutually exclusive though, I'd say they are created. Children don't notice these "patterns" like adults do. They hear about stereotypes from their parents, or their friends who got it from their parents. Plus, the media plays into them too.

Of course, there are almost always exceptions.

interesting
o.k. but how does that apply ro racists - we expect racists to be ignorant or insensitive, or unable to feel the way they do from childhood, yet there are certainly those who do feel that way - the situation had to start somewhere....

i agree they don't have to be mutually exclusive at all, but there ahve been stereotypes well before there was a public school system or a media to speak of.

Re: interesting
Everyone fears what is different. If some alien race came down to Earth and made contact, people would freak out. Would you trust them right off? It's one of our survival mechanisms. Unfortunately, it's propagated in a not-so-good way.
