Re: interesting theory
no, you have a point there - there's the whole 'china is here' speech, where burton finds out this is basically ancient chinese history screwing his day up, and the two girls that are key? one's white, and the other is at least partly (chinese girls don't have green eyes)...

some thing change, some stay the same
excellent point. we should write a paper on this topic.

Re: some thing change, some stay the same
rockin'! i'll take it a step further - when lo pan was cursed in 300bc (or wtf it was) china was almost entirely insular and ignorant of the outside world, yesno? so when lo pan was ordered to find a girl with green eyes, it was roughly equivalent to being told he'd be uncursed when pigs fly.
the other side is that the emperor who cursed him knew he'd be making lo pan somebody else's problem by making the solution to his curse something that could only be found on the other side of the world. not sure which way i lean there...

assuming that ancient chinese demons/gods were part of a realistic cosmology, and they had half the powers those legends say they did, they would have never let things go down the way they did when it came to western expansion. granted, it still looks like we will all be speaking chinese in two generations, but i think they would have done that at any one of the several turning points in history where china could have swallowed the west.

the movie is good precisely because of what we are bssing about here. it is poorly enough put together to be cult classic, with a sprinkling of classic enough to make it a wild ride.

jsut think, the original tale was set in the wild west (a la the Kung Fu series). samurai vs cowboy (which is what burton's char was supposed to be). Carpenter had it rewritten 2x, and rushed it to beat out "The Golden Child". makes me wonder how it would have done if he hadn't had to rush it,.

Re: problem
not like the golden child was that great a flick to beat :-p

so you're saying it can't be real because the chinese gods would have kicked some serious butt before now - what if it's all part of a master plan? who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of ancient chinese gods?
