why do the first and last letter row on your keyboard have 17 keys?

multiply the number of keys in the first and the last times the number of keys in the middle rows (17 x 9)

Q is the 17th letter in the alphabet

look at the keyboard as letters in columns each column has a number or value

Q is always followed by U, which has what value?

add the total of all columns that doesn't contain any vowels...

Q the first and M (13th letter) the last letter are in which columns?

right.

patterns emerge no matter what you are looking at. it is part of nature, it is part of life. sometimes the patterns show bad things. sometimes they show good things. sometimes, they show destruction. destruction is either a good or bad thing, depending on if you are the destroyed, or the destroyer.

Hm.

The first letter row on my American keyboard begins with Tab and ends with \ - for a total (including tab) of 14 keys.

On a Swiss keyboard, it is also 14, but ends with the Enter key.

Re: you have a mini-board?
I didn't include those as there is a space between the letter keys and the action keys (page up, etc.) and then another space between those keys and the number pad.

Just swimming through...
ah, the golden spiral. =)

the keyboard thing is neat, i like drawing attention to the myriad of patterns that surround us. It seems odd to me that this isn't some well known, part of life that everyone just accepts, doncha think?

definitely
life moves too fast to see them, most of the time.

wait--keyboards are part of nature?

the keyboard used to be set up alphabetically but typists could type so fast that the type writers became jammed so they messed up the letters to slow down typists. . .

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Typewriter_keyboard

but patterns are freaky. . . like the video that came on showing a typewriter keyboard just as I started commenting (lindsey Buckingham singing Holiday Road)

i know al about the patterning of keyboards
for a couple years i was using a non-standard remapped layout, but it was too hard to keep switching between my pc and someone else's.

what i find interesting is that this pattern emerged as a result of the modification of the original layout you are referencing, as it was added on to computers. pretty freaky.
