quote queez

i had a bad nights sleep last night. i tried to get to sleep fighting brainstorming an idea for NaNoWriMo next month, and ended up dreaming a fantastic plot. when i woke up at 4am, i was literally excited by what i had dreamed. i told myself i should write it all down, but, instead, i just tried committing it all to memory by running though it all again. i know, if i can remember the start of it, i can get the whole story back, but i can't remember a damn thing about it for the life of me.

i've been trying since 4am to remember dammit.

anyhow, here is a queez for you. notable quoteables.

Brecht had a good response to Sandburg:

"What if they gave a war and nobody came?
Why then the war will come to you!

And here's a compilation of some of Churchill's lesser-known witty utterances:

When the noted playwright George Bernard Shaw sent him two tickets to the opening night of his new play with a note that read: "Bring a friend, if you have one," Churchill, not to be outdone, promptly wired back: "You and your play can go fuck yourselves."

What's that Bond quote from, by the way?

The definitive quote is from Casino Royale:

'A dry martini,' he said. 'One. In a deep champagne goblet.'
'Oui, monsieur.'
'Just a moment. Three measures of Gordon's, one of vodka, half a measure of Kina Lillet. Shake it very well until it's ice-cold, then add a large thin slice of lemon peel. Got it?'
'Certainly monsieur.' The barman seemed pleased with the idea.
'Gosh, that's certainly a drink,' said Leiter.
Bond laughed. 'When I'm...er...concentrating,' he explained, 'I never have more than one drink before dinner. But I do like that one to be large and very strong and very cold, and very well-made. I hate small portions of anything, particularly when they taste bad. This drink's my own invention. I'm going to patent it when I think of a good name.' ”

Which demonstrates that Fleming knew as much about martinis as he knew about firearms.

diamonds are forever
europeans generally go 6:1 on thier mix for martinis too. CR is the first and only book where Bond goes that direction with the drink. Everything thereafter is a vodka martini.

Flemming himself was a vodka martini guy, but never with a twist. I remember reading somewhere about how he made that drink up just to offer that dash of romanticism to the character he was trying to create.

Re: diamonds are forever
And meanwhile, shaking it with ice instead of stirring it just makes him look like a pussy who carries around a .25 automatic.

yeah, that right brain-generated stuff is prone to fading from memory pretty quickly.

and even if you think you're making adequate notes at the time, it is liable to not make a whit of sense later. i.e. i was looking through scraps of dialogue i was collecting for a screenplay and came upon a notation: "Hypnotize me."

while i know which character says that and to whom he says it, i will be damned if i can remember the context - the preceding and following lines, etc. but i do remember that it was funny as hell. frustrating.
