my folks just put down our family dog of 14 years. my dad was already in the city, so my brother had to go help my mom. apparently she had a tumor on her spine, and her legs stopped working.

We often joke, ruefully, that Hetty will live forever, dreading the day (hopefully a decade and a half from now) when we'll lose her. Just the thought breaks our hearts.
