i'm none too pleased myself
lifetime membership don't mean much when the club gets unplugged.

Re: i'm none too pleased myself
you must know some people who can buy LJ and run it with one hand tied behind their backs...
Jan. 7th, 2009 04:39 pm (UTC)
sure, there are some nigerian guys..
at a 30 million price tag, even if they were willing to sell at a loss, that would be a monumental cost - the big issue is you can make a site like this break even, at best, but you can't make the kind of returns they were assuming they would make on it.

Re: sure, there are some nigerian guys..
hyperbole aside i literally have no idea what i would do if they took LJ down.
Jan. 7th, 2009 04:31 pm (UTC)
but i just paid my $25 for the year! they'd better refund that shit if they shutdown. why don't they close down all these free journals and just force people to pay? i'd keep my journal with ads on it, even if i had to pay for it. if lj gets shutdown, i'd completely lose contact with all my friends. and i still refuse to give into the ridiculosity of twitter.

this is pretty much all i'll tolerate - i'm happy with wordpress as an alternative, but i like being able to intermix lame communities into my RSS/friends aggregates without having to lose any sleep over the work it takes.

fucking russians.

Re: yeah
if this isn't reason for another world war, then i can't think of a better one.

i know, right?
where the fuck is sarah palin when you need her?
Jan. 7th, 2009 04:52 pm (UTC)
This all sounds so very familiar, given my current work situation. Maybe they can get in on a Blogger Bailout?
Jan. 7th, 2009 04:56 pm (UTC)
if only...
how _are_ things at work? shit. we must dish.
Jan. 7th, 2009 04:58 pm (UTC)
Re: ugh
Things are actually on the up-and-up! Harry Houdini, a.k.a. our CEO, has miraculously gotten us a two-year extension to sign on 1/15. Of course, I said to Dramane, "That means we're stuck here, right?" Hey, a job's a job's a job, etc. But you know, it's been one scary time around here, I'll tell you what.
Jan. 7th, 2009 09:22 pm (UTC)
well, that is great
i believe the stress situation - believe me i do. i am glad you have a prestidigitator to assist you with his executive miracles.

i know, that sounds dirty, right?
Jan. 7th, 2009 05:18 pm (UTC)

Jan. 7th, 2009 05:19 pm (UTC)

Re: i feex it

I tried the Install, but didn't finish because I'm at work. Do you know where the entries are getting saved to? It just started downloading, but I don't recall it asking me where to put it. Techy stuff, I'm a little naive with.

Thanks for posting this, by the way.

C:\Program Files\LiveJournal Backup\LJ\ i believe
Jan. 7th, 2009 06:20 pm (UTC)
Ok, Thanks.
Jan. 7th, 2009 07:09 pm (UTC)
Yeah, I did it yesterday--got warned by a few friends in fandom who are always on a hair trigger with this kind of stuff.

I once took everything from my "books" tag and put it in WordPress because I was thinking of doing a books blog--I abandoned the idea, but the xfer was easy as pie. But what's the fucking point without friendslocking and filtering?
Jan. 7th, 2009 07:22 pm (UTC)
the public/private/filter is a big part of what has kept me here. i'm on vox, and, wuite frankly, it sucks.

i hope that somehow, lj finds a way.

Re: right
i think blogger implemented a friends-only type feature some time ago. no threads, though. another really nice feature of LJ that is completely absent from other blogging software.
Jan. 7th, 2009 09:18 pm (UTC)
i'm pretty sure blogger's is binary
there are in-or-out list-only posts, but i don't think it lets you group those lists. i will look into it though. you are very right about threading, but that can easily be dealt with via theme settings or ajax on most platforms.
Jan. 7th, 2009 09:26 pm (UTC)
Re: i'm pretty sure blogger's is binary
well i only really use the binary feature, not lists, so it is good enough for me.

thanks for the heads up. i am running the backup now. what about communities, though?
Jan. 7th, 2009 09:44 pm (UTC)
that is a pretty good question
i think you may be able to back them uip from RSS?
Jan. 8th, 2009 02:12 am (UTC)
there is nothing at that site just a wierd picture of a fucked up tree or something
Jan. 8th, 2009 02:41 pm (UTC)
i got a blog there, but i haven't moved over the placeholder page.
believe it or not, that is what your brain looks like on drugs - they bound a image-receptive chemcial to a drug they were testing, and then imaged the veins in the brain.
