Why does a roast beef sandwich, ordered from any Subway I've ever eaten at, always have a fishy smell that ruins the sandwich? More importantly, why do I never rememebr this until the first bite of a roast beef sandwich from Subway?
i ate a Subway roast beef sandwich almost every day for 3 months in 1999. Never had a problem with them then. maybe because the aromatique vapeurs from the tuna salad waft over and settle on the beef?
i don't eat lunch often, but if i ate the same thing every day for a week, much less three months, i'd probably go bonzo.
i think it has something to do with preservatives. all subway meats are pre-sliced, sitting in little pre-measured amounts in those plastic bins. i'd buy cross-contamination if it was one place, but this has been since i started going in the early 90's, when they opened one up in the middle of my hometown, and pretty much any other one i've ever been in, across multiple states.
i like plenty of other sandwiches from them, and have sufficient condiment overlap to have eliminated all other factors than the roast beef. i think they must just spritz it with something to have it keep its color and moisture, sliced, sitting in a bin all day.
at my high school, instead of going to class for the last 1/3 of senior year, most kids do a volunteer program. I was volunteering at a school on 71st and broadway. there wasn't a lot of time for lunch, subway was close, it was healthier than mcdonalds, and fairly cheap, so i just got into a rut of getting the same thing every day- roast beef, swiss, lettuce, tomato, onion, mustard and mayo. i haven't had that sandwich from subway much since then though.
i rarely get lunch - i just happened to be between buildings (where there was a subway) and had the time. with the amount of construction in the area where i work, trying to get into a deli is a waste of time - construction workers walk in with paper-plate sized lists, and normal customers are waiting like 40 mins. subway delivers, so i was able to order and go.
i do not normally dine at subways (hence the lack of memory on this particular issue), but they are cheap and fast, which not much else is around my workplace.
